Making Whiteness Visible

I don't know if this has been posted before, but since I'm not reading LJ this month, I can't tell. Hope it's useful anyhow. It was passed on through a mailing list.

Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible

A must-see for all people who are interested in justice, spiritual growth and community making. It features the experiences of white women and men who have worked to gain insight into what it means to challenge notions of racism and white supremacy in the U.S.
The film premieres tonight, effectively, in Oakland.

Honours Thesis: Whiteness, Multiculturalism and Cronulla

I just thought I'd update everyone on what I'm up to this year, as it might be of interest to the community/ies.

I've started Honours study in Sociology this semester, and I'm writing my thesis on the Cronulla riots. I'm going to focus on whiteness, privilege and multiculturalism in the current political climate in Australia. I want to explore the social forces that gave rise to the riots, and try to explain them in terms of Ghassan Hage's concept of "paranoid nationalism".

I also want to look at race riots, and whether Cronulla was different in any way to other race riots, both in Australia and overseas (I'm not sure how much a part of my thesis I want to make that, though).

I've also started a mailing list for thesis discussion. Normally Honours students who start in first semester are placed in a class together, and they do a lot in the way of mutual support. I'm trying to supplement that with interested friends and acquaintances who'll listen to my rambles and comment, so I can refine my thoughts on the issues.
If you'd like to join in, you can find me over at: http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/shmesis/
I'm not going to add anyone I don't know, so if you want to participate, let me know who you are and why you're interested before I approve you. Disclaimer is here.

I would totally appreciate any input you have at all. :-)

Apologies for cross-posting.

What About White Groups Against Racism?

What do you all think of groups like a "White People Against Racism" (a made up title, but similar to one my friends are forming)? Is it a good thing since it represents white people taking a stand/action against racism to show that it should be white peoples' concern, or are "white" groups inherently exclusionary even when their stated purpose is anti-racist? I understand the idea, but it still seems wrong to be l"This group is for white people" since that would be an offensive idea in other contexts.

Did anyone else see that Primetime show segment on the teenage girls who were "White Nationalist" pop singers? What did you think?

(no subject)

Hey there...sorry I haven't posted an intro earlier, but I had my default Friends view set up incorrectly, and hadn't seen a single post to this community before I fixed it!

I'm a graduate of Barnard College, where I majored in poli sci/human rights studies and minored in art history. Am applying this year to cultural studies/ethnic studies/american studies PhD programs. Any and all critiques and comments on PhD programs out there would be much appreciated (esp. UCSD and Berkeley's Ethnic Studies depts. and UCLA's Asian American Studies MA program).

Hoping to talk more with you all.

My first day of class was today. (I'm taking a class called Multicultural Issues.) It wasn't the greatest timing, since pretty much all week (so far) has been a disaster and my college schedule kinda got very screwy at the last minute (yesterday, the day before class started) and my cat's been sick (which is sad in itself but my parents had every carpet in the house cleaned not even two months ago.)

Soooo anyway--I get into class and I wasn't really sure what kind of professor to expect since this professor was brand spankin' new, but you should have seen her. She's so small and tiny and has this little voice and she's adorable. Plus, judging from the syllabus it'll be an easy-peasy class (at least for the sociology people like me) but it still looks like it will be very interesting :)
